Is your health freedom at risk? Who decides what type of health care is best for you? Do you support homebirth or herbalism? Do you believe you have the right to choose what food you eat? The FDA has something to say about that, and you probably won’t like it.
Do You Have Health Freedom?
The concept of the Food and Drug Administration as an agency that protects the public appeals to many. Certainly, it protects the public from dangerous and false claims made by charlatans peddling snake oil, right? Recently, the FDA sent warning letters to several companies regarding product claims. Some of these were clearly justified, but at least one was not. And here we are left with the dilemma of whether or not the FDA is needed, or just another overreaching agency.
It wasn’t that long ago that the FDA made its position on our food rights known. We have no right to choose what foods we eat, unless the FDA says its ok first. Furthermore, parents did not have the right to feed their children what they thought best for them, either. This came to light due to the FDA’s Dairy Industry-funded opposition to raw dairy, which has been growing in popularity as it is a higher quality product.
While Herbal Medicine has always belonged to the people, the FDA has now imposed rules that would discourage the tradition of the local, village herbalist from freely practicing his or her craft. Either teach, or make products, but making it very difficult to do both without crossing a line that can shut an herbalist down.
Freedom to Practice
Lots of herbalists fly under the radar, going about our business, working with the underserved, maybe placing our goods in various, small gift shops and holistic centers, or selling on handcraft sites like Etsy, and teach in more private settings. Maybe you can find us. Maybe not. With 80% of the world using Herbal Medicine as their primary form of health care, why should we in the “land of the free” have to work with the fear that our own government would shut us down? Unless, of course, the FDA merely exists to protect the interests of the pharmaceutical industry by locking out the competition.
