Sleep DeprivationEveryone has heard of the term night owl. But did you know staying up at all hours can greatly affect you. Sleep deprivation is something we all at some time or another have gone through. Sleep deprivation is not having enough sleep, this can be chronic or acute. Did you know that the first 24 to 48 hrs of marine corp processing you are deprived of sleep? A tactic to weed out some of the weak recruits who would not make it much further in training. It was also one of the main reasons I myself slept with no problem once assigned to my training platoon. But that is a completely different story.

Sleep Deprivation can effect the body and mind in many different ways. Fatigue, daytime sleepiness, clumsiness and weight loss or weight gain. It also greatly affects the brain and cognitive function. Our mood, memory and overall mental health can greatly be affected as well as our decision making skills. This could cause us to make a fatal error.

Lack of sleep can affect how we handle certain situations like emergencies or time of need. You should know how this can alter your decisions and how you can be ready to handle that moment. Being overly tired or exhausted can set you up for accidents that else wise could have been completely avoided or minimized. Such accidents could cause an injury and more stress to an already stressful situation. Also sleep deprivation does not affect just adults but children as well. We will discuss tips and tricks to minimize sleep deprivation. How to handle a stressful situation under such circumstances. What signs to look for. Let’s not add anymore insult to injury.
