Could you manage depression, anxiety, ADHD, or bi-polar disorder after a disaster?
You probably know someone close to you with one of the conditions listed above, because a significant percentage of Americans are on anti-psychotic prescriptions. These drugs are linked to dangerous side effects, like thoughts of suicide, hallucinations, and violent behavior.

Unfortunately, quitting cold turkey can be just as dangerous, causing depression to worsen and trigger a downward spiral, also including suicidal thoughts and physical symptoms of withdrawal. Many need to be reduced in a slow and deliberate manner to lessen the potential for such harm.
What would happen if the pharmacies ran out of these medications, say after a major tornado, or a trucker’s strike shutting down supply lines, or long term civil unrest?
For individuals currently taking these medications, many would probably continue taking their pills as usual, assuming the government would come in to establish normalcy before their supply ran out. Even in the face of repeated failures by FEMA to effectively respond to catastrophes, many people will not prepare ahead of time for their mental health needs, or the withdrawal effects when the meds run out.
To put this in perspective, a study done by Medco Health Solutions found that 1 in 5 Americans, or 20%, take some type of anti-psychotic medication. Another site, AnxietyCenter.com, put that figure at over twice that estimate, at 43%. The bottom line, that’s a whole lot of people who will be suddenly without their drugs during a period of major stress and likely sadness, who will also be feeling the physical effects of withdrawal, all within the first few weeks after a calamity.
You, however, are not the average person. You are looking for a mental health back up plan for either yourself, a family member, a friend, or other member of your survival group. While there are herbs that can ease symptoms of these conditions, they are not automatic analogs or magic bullets., Luckily, in many cases, there are herbal and natural options for managing mental health conditions.
