Can You Afford To Get sick When SHTF?

As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. In bad times, it would be worth much more than just a pound. It is as if disaster is form of “illness inflation”.

Everyone gets sick once in a while. If you get sick today, what’s the cost? For most people, it’s going to be a co-pay at their doctor’s office, an additional co-pay (or two) at the pharmacy, plus another $20- $50 in things like tissues, cough drops, and mentholated ointments. It may possibly mean a day at home without pay if you have no sick or personal days to cover you.

According to Investopedia.com, the average American with health insurance will spend about $130 due to catching the flu, plus another $92 in lost wages, for a typical total cost of $222 per person. Of course, if you do not have insurance, the cost can be much higher. Still, you will likely recover in a matter of days and return to your normal life, just with a couple hundred dollars less in your wallet.

The cost of being sick in the aftermath of a disaster would be significantly higher, though it wouldn’t necessarily be measured in dollars. Imagine you have bugged out to a safer location or have bugged in on your established homestead. Next, imagine you have caught a cold or flu. You can’t just call a neighbor down for favor, since the phone lines wouldn’t work. Every day tasks suddenly require herculean efforts.

How would this impact your ability to feed livestock or split wood? How would this impact your ability to defense yourself or evacuate? What if your minor cold developed into bronchitis or pneumonia and there is no safe access to a hospital?

It is all too easy to get run down and vulnerable to infection.
