Diabetes after an EMPIn this episode, I cover some of the herbal, dietary, and glucose-monitoring strategies available for off-grid, post-disaster diabetes care. Diabetes is a serious condition in the best of times. Unfortunately, however, diabetics are particularly vulnerable to an EMP.

Due to the increased threats of nuclear war and an electromagnetic pulse coming out of North Korea, I have been getting a lot of questions about how to care for diabetes post-SHTF, especially post-EMP. This week’s show hopes to answer those questions.

Diabetics are often entirely dependent upon their medication. Some noninsulin dependent diabetics, however, are able to manage their blood glucose through diet alone. Some diabetics are entirely dependent upon insulin because their pancreas does not make its own insulin. Others are dependent upon glucose-lowering medications, such as metformin.

As detailed in William Forstchen’s powerful work of fiction, One Second After, it wouldn’t just be grocery store shelves that would be bare after an EMP. Pharmacies will also be picked through without hope of resupply.

What the book did not consider is whether or not there are any alternatives for diabetics in this situation. Between personal emails and discussions in online prepper forums, I have been fielding questions about this issue most of this past week.

The strategies I will discuss come from my own herbal practice, as well as being a diabetic myself. This topic is near and dear to my heart, as it affects me directly. I cannot urge you strongly enough to be proactive in prepping for your own health and those you love.

As a head’s up for the weeks to come, I have also been getting questions on a few other conditions and how an EMP might impact them as well. These include hypertension, arthritis, asthma, high cholesterol, and mood disorders, such as depression and anxiety.
