Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis!

Tuberculosis isn’t on a lot of people’s radar, but it should be. Technically, there is a global tuberculosis pandemic, with someone dying every 25 seconds. Tuberculosis is also developing resistance to even the most powerful, “last line of defense” antibiotics currently made.

Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB) and extensively drug resistance tuberculosis (XDR TB) have been identified by the World Health Organization as
serious, global threats. With a mortality rate without viable antibiotics at 50%, more deadly than SARS or MERS, drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis is potentially devastating.

The United States has been fortunate, with having less than ten thousand cases of tuberculosis per year, which is a rate of 3.2 people out of 100,000. However, the rate among foreign-born persons represent 60% of new cases in the US. Tuberculosis rates in developing nations around the world are far higher than in the United States.

This also happens to include countries like El Salvador , Honduras, and Guatamala- three countries from which thousands of people are swarming through our southern border. Healthcare workers have been trying to sound the alarm over diseases in this population, including active tuberculosis. Meanwhile, our government claims all is well, and these children are all happy and healthy. Yet, the media is not permitted to investigate, and the lack of transparency speaks volumes.

Just recently, on July 24, 2014, ABC News reported that a man from Mexico went to a hospital, was diagnosed with TB, was discharged, and directed to stay at a local motel. A care provider was to deliver the necessary medications to him. But, he was gone.

San Joaquin County Deputy District Attorney Stephen Taylor said, “He could be in a homeless shelter. He could be around the corner from the courthouse,” Taylor said. “We don’t know.”

One of my biggest concerns, however, is the hush-hush nature over the risk of drug-resistant tuberculosis as those coming straight through our border are shuffled around the country. Despite government claims that these individuals pose no threat, there is no clear indication that proper screenings and treatment have actually taken place. And, with each new infection, the bacteria have another chance to adapt and develop greater resistance.
