Digestive System nettle-flowerThis episode wraps up our discussion of the digestive system and herbs that you an stock up on or grow to help you face digestive system illnesses and complaints when modern medical care is not available. We wrap up this three-part series with chronic illnesses, specifically: Crohn’s Disease, Celiac Disease, and stomach ulcers.

Stomach ulcers, or peptic ulcers, are very common. Once thought to be caused by spicy or acidic foods, it’s now known that peptic ulcers are caused by a bacteria, H. pylori, or through long-term overuse of anti-inflammatory medications, such as NSAIDS or ibuprofen. They can be painful, and cause a host of problems ranging in severity from heartburn to gastrointestinal bleeding. Antibiotics are often prescribed in cases of H. pylori, which is also known to be a carcinogen, but it is difficult to treat, and tends to reemerge.

Digestive System MarshmallowBoth Crohn’s Disease and Celiac Disease are both Digestive System illnesses as well as autoimmune illnesses. In both cases, there is inflammation, stomach pains and cramping, diarrhea, bloating, weakness, and more. They are both often misdiagnosed, sometimes for each other, or for other digestive illnesses. Celiac may be the most under-diagnosed of all digestive system illnesses. Both are managed through diet. Crohn’s Disease requires anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen and steroids. Only rarely are those medications used for Celiac Disease.

Life is tough enough with one of these conditions while times are good. You need to have a plan in place to help improve your condition, and to deal with flare ups should they arise even if there is no pharmacy open to refill your prescription.
