The political climate over the past few years has been a polarizing force of nature that in many ways has divided the nation. Some of you may be familiar with the term “United we stand, divided we fall.” It is as true today as it was back then.
This week on The Next Generation, we explore some of the collateral damage caused by the government shutdown here in the United States. This shutdown has exposed several loopholes and points of failure. The government holds a balance over food systems, exports and imports, national parks, and medical industries just to name a few. As a parent, I find these kinks in the system are an ideal way to demonstrate how the government works.
Perhaps one of the most critical messages throughout this shutdown for many families is the personal financial impact it has on families across the country. Thousands of Federal workers have been forced to endure a month without pay regardless of their skill, status, or position.
The need to be prepared with enough food and resources on hand has never been more pronounced. The thousands of families caught off guard by the duration of this shutdown are experiencing this first hand. Those of us who aren’t as affected should be taking the time to use this event as a teaching moment.
