Edible Forest Garden
Imagine yourself in a forest where everything around you is either food or medicine! you have to look carefully, but if you do, you find fruits and nuts swelling with ripeness on the branches all around you! Because it’s so well hidden, “Zombie hoards” pass by without noticing. Pears, apples, persimmons, plums, almonds, and peaches hang from the branches. Shrubs fill the gaps in the forest canopy with raspberries, blueberries, currants, hazelnuts, wild edibles, herbs, and perennial vegetables thickly cover the ground. You can use all of these plants for food or medicine too. Some attract beneficial insects, birds, and butterflies. Others act as soil builders, or simply help keep out weeds. Here and there vines climb on trees, shrubs, or arbors with fruit hanging through the foliage—hardy kiwis, grapes, and passionflower fruits. In sunnier glades large stands of Jerusalem artichokes grow together with groundnut vines. These plants support one another as they store energy in their roots for later harvest and winter storage. It’s a magical garden of Eden, where no one maintains it, no one digs or rototills the soil, and everything grows in abundance year after year! Join GoatHollow, and his guest “Athatcher85″ this Wednesday for a discussion on how Preppers can start their own “Edible Forest Garden”
