As a kid growing up, I remember the first knife I ever received. I remember the weight and feel of it, the dangers and risks, the responsibilities and the restraints. It was a gift and still is to this day.

For me, it was the symbol that I was ready – even at that young age – to handle a tool that could one day lead to my own survival.

Fast forward almost 30 years. Knives in the hands of a child are treated much differently. Possessing a knife at school is grounds for being expelled. Not so long ago carrying a pocket knife was common practice. Boy scouts were expected to always have their trusty knife on hand. So what happened?

This week we tackle the subject of our own every day carry knives and the potential for our kids to know and understand the importance of this life saving tool. We will be joined by special guest Sean Weirich, owner and creator of Jolly Roger Custom Knives, talking about the importance of not only knife ownership, but proper use, training and skills.

Sean left an 11-year career on a leap of faith to create the best custom handmade original knives on the market. He’s sold knives all over the United States and even had one reviewed by Melissa Backwoods from Naked and Afraid. His dual focus on creating custom knives and upholding a stewardship of knife skill sets is a characteristic we can all learn from.
