Holiday Zombies

Zombies, persons who are or appear to be lifeless, apathetic, or totally lacking in independent judgment; automaton!  I don’t know about lifeless or apathetic but the lack of independent judgment and automaton hits the nail on the head. Holiday Zombies have risen AGAIN! Have you seen them, they are on the march…. OR have you succumbed and are in fact a Holiday Zombie?

The zombie has become a familiar catch word and icon in today’s world especially in the field of preparedness.  Even our government through the Department of Homeland Security uses the zombie imagery to attract the masses to the idea of becoming prepared.  Not so much to become one but to deter us from becoming the dreaded undead, mindlessly marauding with no real hope.  Since at least the early 30’s the Zombie has pervaded our society as the soldiers of the era brought back stories of their experiences in Haiti.  These stories spawned all manner of books and horror movies solidifying the Americanized view of the zombie as the walking dead. Story after story tells of a person or persons becoming a mindless alive but dead life form often under the control of someone or something else. The zombie has no real thought of its own, obeying the slightest whim of the controller.

Given the above description and the holiday season now in full swing it appears holiday zombies have surfaced and are in full swing invading and, scavenging the aisles of every department store in the nation.  In actuality this holiday zombie has spread worldwide, a truly terrifying spectacle during this time of supposed goodwill.  The original zombie is said to be created by the voodoo bokor through the use of magical powders, mind control and religion.  The powders in fact exist, as documented in 1985 by renowned ethno botanist, Wade Davis and reviled in the movie Serpents and Rainbows. The powders contain among other things the natural properties of the plant datura and the puffer fish known to paralyze to the extent of mimicking death thereafter a paste of mind controlling ingredients is given the intended zombie.  So zombies exist or at least someone controlled with the mind does.

How does this translate to the holiday zombie, as in fact no magic powders are applied. The other primary ingredient of a zombie however is implemented profusely beginning earlier and earlier each year. These phenomena apparent on every media source in the form of commercials. We are all subjected to the barrage of information on how to secure the love and adoration of others. How to produce goodwill and happiness, the ultimate feel good for ourselves and others. Print and verbal commercials inundate us from pre-Halloween culminating in the extravaganza of Black Friday!  The holiday zombies pinnacle of dominance. You’ve read the stories year after year of pre-dawn shoppers (holiday zombies) ravaging stores, trampling their fellow man all in the name of a holiday designated to honor and preserve the positives of humankind.

We are not holiday zombies, but many become so through the use of mind control. I urge each of you to stop the holiday zombie in its tracks. Step back from the commercialism of the holiday. Preparedness can help you resist the temptation of the holiday zombie. Use your skills of preparedness to create a holiday of peace and goodwill.  Neither is achieved through the purchasing of a big screen TV at a discounted price or the buying of anything at half price regardless of the drastic savings. Ask yourself what is the real cost.  Goodwill and peace are not encouraged by the giving of a material object but by the sharing of oneself with another.  The genuine caring felt for another and the sharing between us, is the real path to survival through preparedness of the mind and heart. Let’s look again to the past and create a better future using the best of yesterday combining it with the virtues of today. Create real goodwill and peace by sharing yourself.
