What Do You Want From a Prepared Community?

What Do You Want From a Prepared Community?

We all know that we cannot exist without a prepared community. The lone wolf scenario or even the single family unit is a very troublesome one. Being outgunned and overpowered in all sorts of situations can happen to a small group that consists of a couple of adults.

The idea of community is old and is explained with sheer eloquence in John Donne’s Meditations XVII:

No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friends or of thine own were: any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee.

What can a Prepared Community Be?

To often we preppers start off in the middle of the race. Its because we are so often driven by fear. We are scared into making a move or making a purchase based on impending disaster.

Let’s calm down and consider where we should start with a prepared community and what we might want out of that community interaction. If we start with a desire for something we can work towards it. If we have no goal then all of this can seem rather impossible.

To further explore the community idea you should check out my book Come Unity; Community

Security

Maybe you want security and overwatch form a prepared community. This is a great use of that community. Security in a disaster is something that will benefit all. If people start looting homes and cars that will be a serious issue. Everyone will want an answer to that.

Cohesion

Maybe you are looking for relationships first. That’s the way to go. You might be surprised at who you meet and what you find out about them.

We have another family of preppers on our street! Never would have known it if we didn’t get out and meet people.

This is by far the hardest and most important part of a prepared community but it goes a long way

Communication

Maybe just having a high functioning network of communications is your desire. That can be very effective, too!  You might use meetings or online communications. It can all make a distance. You will have a tremendous effect on things like crime and event planning with a communications system.

Lots of communities are using Nextdoor to communicate all sorts of things between neighbors.

Resources

One of the best expectations to have of a prepared community is to provide resources. These can come in all forms.

  • Food
  • Skills
  • Tools
  • Water
  • Ammunition
  • Firearms
  • First Aid
  • Communications

Full Bellies at the Least

A community that is fed is one that does not have to become desperate. That is power and that will keep the wheels on the cart in a serious disaster. Understanding food storage and emphasizing its importance in our life is a big way to get others to take it seriously.

Food and firearms are a big part of creating a prepared community because with security and without food people will become feral. Bulk purchasing within a community is a big deal and it can be done. It’s not step one but in my book, I outline how to make that happen.

Conclusion

We are all concerned about the future. None of us want to face it alone. However, a prepared community is going to take a lot of work and a lot of tact. So, gather some resources, come to an understanding of what you want and start putting one foot in front of the other.
