Top 5 Best Anti-Carjacking Guns

Top 5 Best Anti-Carjacking GunsCarjacking is any pugnacious attempt at stealing an occupied vehicle.  Thousands of carjackings occur in the United States each year, and if you don’t want to become another victim, keeping a gun in your car at all times is the best option possible.

A ‘car gun’ is simply a weapon (usually a handgun) that you keep stored in your vehicle in a location that is easy to access from the driver’s seat.  That way, should you ever be attacked while in your car, you can quickly grab your pistol to defend yourself.

Having said that, not every gun works well as a car gun. Let’s go over the things to look for in a car gun, and then specific makes and models of guns that you should consider.

What Makes Good Car Guns?

When looking for a firearm to keep in your car, here are some factors that you should consider:

It Has To Fit Perfectly

Although this should be obvious, however, have you thought where you would keep a car gun if you had one? Obviously not in the trunk, as you wouldn’t have the time to get to it if you were under attack. How about between the seats, in the glove compartment, or in a safe bolted to the floor?  Once you decide where you’ll keep your gun, you obviously need to choose a model that will fit well there.

It Should Have Enough Stopping Power

Do not consider smaller calibers such as .22 LR, .32 ACP, or .380 ACP for an anti-carjacking pistol. Instead, 9mm or .38 Special should be the very lightest that you go.

It Can’t Be Valuable To You

Any valuable gun in your collection should never be the one you keep in your car.  Thousands of cars are broken into each year, and in the event that yours is one of them, there’s a strong possibility that a thief may find your firearm and steal it. For this reason, choose a pistol that is either not very much money, or that doesn’t have any sentimental value to you.

It Must Be Reliable

This holds true for any gun that you choose for personal defense. Your weapon has to go BANG every time you pull the trigger. There are many handguns sold on the market that will work well, so don’t think that you’re limited solely to the five you’re about to discover.

This will be even more important in a bug out situation, when you’re likely to encounter a lot of bad people along the way. Then you KNOW you have a survival gun that will keep you safe no matter what.

1911

The 1911 is a naturally slim pistol, which means it will store nicely between the seats of a car.  As such, many opt for the 1911 as their car gun. You can even build your own 1911, at home, using a solid 1911 Frame.

However, there are many other qualities that make the 1911 a popular choice as well.  Since it fires the powerful .45 ACP round, the 1911 has plenty of stopping power, so you can stop a carjacker dead in their tracks.  The grip angle is also naturally ergonomic and provides you with a natural point of aim, so you’ll be able to line your sights up quickly when the need arises.

One of the criteria that we set for a car gun is that it can’t be valuable to you, due to the risk of losing it or getting it beat up, and 1911s tend to be more expensive guns.  Nonetheless, there are manufacturers of 1911s who make reliable models at less expensive prices of around $600-700, including Remington, Ruger, and Springfield.  These aforementioned would be better suited for riding in your car than a nicer version that costs $1,000 or more.

Glock 19/Glock 23

Compact, reliable, ubiquitous, and armed with a lethal firepower, the Glock 19 9mm (or Glock 23 .40 S&W) is an excellent anti-carjacking gun. Due to its compact size, it can be easily hidden in your car, whether in a safe, between the seats, or in the glove compartment.

The Glock is simply one of the simplest pistols on the planet and has been imitated by virtually every other manufacturer of polymer-framed, striker-fired hand guns.  It’s also utterly reliable and a gun that you can count on to defend yourself and your family in the event of a carjacking.

Now, you may be wondering why we would recommend the compact Glock 19 or 23 as an anti-carjacking gun and not the full-size Glock 17 or 22. The answer is because the 19 and 23 are more compact, therefore making them easier to hide than the fuller-sized options. Furthermore, both the 19 and 23 will accept the full-size magazines as well, if you desire having increased firepower.

Smith & Wesson Governor

The Smith and Wesson Governor is a six shot, double action revolver chambered in three calibers: .410 Bore, .45 Long Colt, and .45 ACP.

Yes, this is what is called a ‘shotgun revolver,’ and while some may doubt the effectiveness of the .410 in regards to stopping power, the truth is that a .410 buckshot round is equivalent in firepower to three 9mm rounds going off at once.  Undeniably, this is a very appealing option, as all you have to do is point and shoot at close range.

In addition to .410, .45 LC and .45 ACP are both excellent self-defense rounds as well.  The .45 ACP rounds can only load by moon clips, which will hold either a three or six round at a time.  You may decide that you want to alternate the Governor with different loads (such as doing three .45 ACP and three .410s or interchanging .410 and .45 LC).

The Governor is a heavy weapon as it fires large rounds and has a six-shot cylinder. Still, the barrel is just two and a half inches long, which means you can fit in most places where you would keep the other guns on this list.

 Taurus 608

The .357 Magnum round has a reputation for being a one-shot man-stopper, and there’s no denying that it’s a very effective caliber for self-defense. Those who want a .357 revolver for their anti-carjacking gun will have many options to choose from, one of which is the Taurus 608.  What’s unique about the 608 over other revolvers, however, is that it holds eight rounds in the cylinder instead of the traditional 5 or 6.

While this means that the 608 as a whole is much wider than other .357s due to the increased round count, it also means that you have more rounds to defend yourself before you have to reload.

The 608 is part of Taurus’ large frame series of revolvers.  The steel used for the gun is hammer forged, while the ported barrel helps to reduce recoil produced from the .357 Magnum round.

Another advantage to owning a .357 Magnum revolver, in general, is that you can also shoot and load .38 Specials, which are lighter and easier to shoot than the .357.

 Taurus Judge

The last anti-carjacking gun that we’ll talk about is the Taurus Judge.  The Judge is very similar to the Governor, in that it’s also a double action revolver that fires the .410 Bore round.  However, there are still differences between the Judge and the Governor for you to consider.

First, while the Governor can additionally fire the .45 LC and the .45 ACP round (with moon clips), the Judge can only additionally fire .45 LC.  The Governor also holds six rounds in the cylinder to the Judge’s five.  Depending on your perspective, this may be a positive or a negative factor.  It’s a negative, in that you have one less round before you need to reload, but a positive when you consider that the overall size and weight of the Judge is smaller and therefore easier to conceal in your car.

In addition, the Judge is also available in far more configurations than the Governor is.  Not only are there versions of the Judge that accept three inches .410 shells (whereas the Governor currently only allows two and a half inch shells), it also comes in a greater variety of sizes and barrel lengths.

 Conclusion

Overall, keeping a gun in your car may not only mean you get to KEEP your car, it may save your life.  Remember to keep it in a safe location where nobody else can easily find it except for you, as well as in a place that will be easy for you to grab when the time comes. Any one of the five guns we have gone over will be a suitable choice for an anti-carjacking personal defense weapon.

I would never leave my weapon in an in attended car in an area of high crime, to me that notion is crazy. I carry everywhere, keep your weapon on you. I do agree with bringing a large bore weapon, I carry an R1 stainless 1911

I agree Dave. Not only can the gun be stolen from the car, you could be held responsible if that gun is used in a crime, or to shoot or kill someone else especially if it is left unsecured in a car.

The first rule of CCW is to take a gun with you! If you are out of the car without your gun, and the need to defend yourself arises, you might as well have left the gun at home. There will NOT be time to go get it.

Never leave a gun in your car, it is a VERY bad idea! You will be responsible if it will be stolen.

It is good to carry a handgun with you but not to leave it in your car even for short period of time.
