A child’s first exposure to the idea of loss and suffering often comes through the death of a family member or family pet, divorce, separation. The world as they know it comes to an end. This fixture, once a permanent part of their life, is gone forever.

But coaching kids through loss and suffering is no less important than it is for us as adults and as parents. As generations pass and life goes on, how we handle our emotions and push through to regain normalcy are the behaviors they will inadvertently learn. And, conversely, how kids handle these tough times can bring us closer to what is truly important in life.
