Learn Your Country’s HistoryHistory reports that George Santayana once famously quoted, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” A very famous line that we are seeing applies more and more these days. Mark Twain also famously commented on this same quote when he said, “History doesn’t repeat itself, but it does rhyme.” This week we will be talking about learning history, more specifically learning the history of your country. Be it US, Russian, Chinese, British, Japanese, French, German, etc. It is your obligation as a citizen to know your countries history and what did or did not take place. Winston Churchill once said that, “history is written by the victors.”

Meaning what your country says took place might not be accurate. It is important to learn history from your countries enemies and allies. In this show we will be talking about some events in British, Chinese, and US history and not all of it was good.

Take for example the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. In the US we know it as Tiananmen Square, in China it is known as the June Fourth Incident. Others call it the ’89 Democracy Movement. Depending on where you get the information you will get different opinions from student-led demonstrations in Beijing that were removed from the area to military action that killed hundreds of protestors. How about the 1968 My Lai Massacre? History says that in 1968 a group of US military entered My Lai in South Vietnam and brutally massacred anything that was moving. It was rumored that the US tried or did cover this up as a war crime. I would be interested to see what Vietnamese history says about the event.

Lean US history from the Brits, Japanese history from the Chinese, German history from the French, the examples are too numerous, but you get the idea. Join me this Friday as we discuss why it is important to learn world history.
