Healing DIYFireCiderWMHoney is truly ancient medicine. The first written reference to the medicinal use of honey is on a Sumerian tablet over 4000 years ago. Honey has been used medicinally ever since. Honey is useful for many conditions, including wounds, burns , and some of the toughest bacteria we may ever encounter. Plus, it does all of this for less than ten federal reserve notes!

I count myself very lucky that seven years ago my husband decided to keep bees. We always have raw, local honey and wax on hand for all of my herbal projects, and I can’t imagine being without it. Granted, our original interest when embarking upon beekeeping was in the homebrewing of a honey-based alcoholic beverage known as mead. Since then, however, the use of honey has become a major feature in my herbal practice.

Honey is a very versatile ingredient in herbal remedies, and it’s applications are many and include:
Healing Rose-Infused Honey• infused honeys
• herbal syrups
• oxymels (honey and herbal vinegar)
• electuaries (a paste made with herb powders and honey)
• pastilles or lozenges
• direct application on tissue
• ingestion (for allergies)

With wounds, honey can be used to pack a wound to prevent or address an infection. It helps prevent infections in burn victims. It helps the skin to heal from both wounds and burns with less scarring.

Plus, the power of honey can be augmented with the addition of herbs. Infusing honey with St. John’s Wort flowers makes an excellent deep wound treatment that helps heal the wound from the inside out. Blending gotu kola powder into honey makes a burn care treatment that encourages skin cell proliferation.

While honey is not for use with infants (under 1 year old), it is a must have for every herbal first aid and trauma kit. And yes, it can be fermented into herbal mead as a remedy as well.
