A prepper’s first aid kit is a basic kit that’s often found in a bug out bag or stashed in the car. There may be a larger kit in the house. Sure, you can build a quality kit with a visit to your local pharmacy. But, what if that local pharmacy weren’t there? If we have had a societal collapse, and you run out of your bottle of ibuprofen, clotting agent, or tube of triple antibiotic ointment after just the first month, how will you resupply when there is no pharmacy?

Over the past couple of months, I have been giving my herbal kit a makeover. We have been taking more trips to the bug out location lately, and I feel the need for a kit that would do more and last longer. For this episode, I want to give you a bit of insight into what I currently include in my own kit.

This isn’t your typical first aid kit. First aid kits, such as those found in the workplace or ready for purchase at your local drug store or Walmart are woefully inadequate to take care of anything more than a paper cut. If you are going this route, you are better off building your own kit with quality equipment. First aid itself is intended to be only the first level of care, a stop gag measure, before being treated by someone within the medical field, either an EMT, nurse, or doctor. That is not what this kit is designed to do.

This Herbal First Aid Kit kit is designed for the individual who has made the choice to use herbal medicine as part of their primary health care. Currently, 80% of the world’s population uses herbal medicine as their primary form of health care or as part of their primary health care in conjunction with conventional medicine. This is a very different standard of care as compared to the United States that ignores studies on the efficacy of herbal medicine from Europe and Asia.

Thankfully, you do not need to have a degree in Botany or any medical degree to make and use herbal medicines safely and effectively. However, that doesn’t mean that herbal medicine is automatically safe, and caution can be thrown to the wind. If you are going to use herbal medicine as part of your primary health care, you have to do some homework. Get to know the plants, learn their traditional uses, and understand how the body functions.

One of the concepts I try to impress upon my students is to work with herbal medicines now. This is not something that can be learned over night. Many remedies cannot be made overnight either. So, by going through the contents of my Herbal First Aid Kit, which is more of a trauma kit, hopefully it will give you some ideas on how to work with herbs to build something very practical, and get you started with hands on uses of herbal medicine.
