HF Radio Selection for Worldwide CommunicationsI was pleasantly surprised recently, when I passed the technician class amateur radio license exam. The Volunteer Examiner told me the FCC would reissue my expired general class license. That means I can legally operate with much higher power output radios and the HF amateur bands for potentially worldwide radio communications.

So, what HF transceiver should I buy?

That’s the topic for this show with “Reality Check” host Micheal Kline. Micheal and I will discuss how to go about choosing a transceiver, a potentially big investment in radio gear.

HF transceivers for the amateur radio bands in the “shortwave” range of frequencies (160 through 10 meters or about 1.7 to 30 MHz) involve spending from $400 to as much as $5,000. However, there are many very good choices in the $600 to $1200 price range. Micheal and I will focus on that price range discussing radios like the Alinco DX-SR9T SDR, Icom 7300, Kenwood TS-480HX and Yaesu FT-857D.

An antenna tuner is almost an essential companion purchase when buying an HF transceiver. Antenna tuners help you match the radio to the antenna for more efficient transmission of signal and less power loss. Some of the radios have antenna tuners built in and some do not, adding $100 to $300 to the cost of the HF transceiver. You’ll need a good AC to DC power supply which will add to the overall cost.

Don’t forget the antenna! That may dictate what type of radio you can or should purchase. We discuss all of these topics with Micheal Kline of the show Reality Check on the All Hazards Communications Preparedness live show in player above.
