On the next two week’s episodes of the Prepping for Tomorrow program, Author Bobby Akart discusses the number one concern of most preppers—a collapse of the power grid. Do you think this is only the stuff of fiction? Think again!

In the last twenty years alone, there have been more than a dozen major blackouts around the world affecting more than twenty million people per occurrence. For example, in 2003 a widespread power outage which was reportedly caused by a “software bug” occurred throughout the Northeastern and Midwestern United States. 55 million residents in the region and Canada were without power for a period of two weeks in some cases. Many believe that this was caused by a cyber attack and was a trial run for Chinese-backed patriot hackers.

Cyber Warfare is not the only potential cause of widespread grid down scenarios. In March 1989, a severe geomagnetic storm struck Earth and knocked out the Quebec electricity transmission system. A coronal mass ejection created the solar storm conditions which were too much for the Canadian grid to handle. The power failure lasted a day to several weeks in remote areas.

But the mother of all blackouts can be caused by an EMP. The world’s superpowers learned of the devastating impact a nuclear delivered Electromagnetic Pulse can have on the power grid in the 1940’s and 50’s, culminating with the well-documented Starfish Prime test of 1962. It was the nuclear detonation that shook the world. It brought the Soviet Union and the United States to the realization that an all-out nuclear war will kill us all. Today, many rogue nations possess this capability and the push of a button could thrust our nation into darkness.
